The chemical componente of the Chinese herbal medicine of S. scobincaulis have been tested systematically by means of tube-test, paper chromatography and TLC, It was found that the rhizomes of scobinicaulis contain steroidal saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, lactones and comnarins, phytosterols, terpenoids, anthraquinones, phenols, organic acids, tannins, amino and proteins, carbohydrates, volatile oil and fats. Total flavonoids content was also deteminded to be 2.23% by spectrophotometic method using rutin as standard sample. Total saponins content was also deteminded to be 1.85% by weight calculation And through solvent extraction, column chromatography. three compoands were isolated and purifed for the first time from the root of S. scobinicaulis. their chemical structrare were identified as I ( U'-BINAPHTHALENE ) -2,2'-DIOL, II laxogenin 3-o- ( 3 -D-glucopyranosyl-(l?)- ( a-L-arabinopyranosyl-(l-'6)] -3-D-glucopyranoside, III. laxogenin 3-0- ( a-L-arabinopyranosyl-(l-*6)J -3 -D-glucopyranoside.
