| Osteoporosis (OP) is one kind of systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) and microstructure degeneration of bone tissue, with main clinical symptoms of waist-backache, body length Shortening, humpback or even fracture,leading to enhanced bone-fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risk. Osteoporosis goes with aging and the degeneration of the body. Postmenopausalosteoporosis (PMOP) is the type I of the Primary osteoporosis (POP)------the formof Hypermetabolism transforming which easily occurs in post-menopause Aged women. With the advent of gerontal society, the incidence of osteoporosis, as acommon Metabolic disease,and its complication------fracture have a rising tendencyNow osteoporosis.like arteriosclerosis, hypertensive disease, diabetes mellitus (DM) , tumour,and so on, has been categorized as the diseases which have the high incidence rate,high death rate and needs high subsidies for health. So the osteoporosis is not only a worldwide medical care problem but also is a complicated social problem and the extensive attention has been paid to the osteoporosis all over the world.There isn' t such a term as "osteoporosis" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ,but the description of similar clinical conditions exists in many classic books.The first record is in "The Book Copied on Silk of Ma Wang Duei Han Tomb" in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States.After this, the symptoms of osteoporosis was particularly described in the "Canon of Medicine". According to pathogenesis and clinical situation of osteoporosis, it looks like "GuWei" (means:shrink of bone) described in "Canon of Medicine".At the same time, its pathogenesis was particularly analyzed in the "Canon of Medicine"which suggested the Theory "Kidney dominating bone"was key point in realization of osteoporosis in TCM and recorded its Symptoms, Pathology, Therapy, Prognosis. After this, medical doctors of successive dynasties had gradually deepened the realization of osteoporosis .Someone suggested the "Weakness of the Spleen and Stomach" was an important pathogenesis factor for osteoporosis,but majority of them thought the asthenia of kidney was the main pathogenesis according to theTheory "Kidney dominating bone'Mn "Canon of Medicine" and invigorating kidney was the main principles of differentiation and treatment of common syndromes.Professor Liu Qingsi believes that it goes with agingand the degeneration of the body,so "aging" is one of the most important factors for OP.yet the pathogenesis of "aging" has been proved to be caused by asthenia of kidney ,Weakness of the Spleen and Stomach and Blood Stasis which Professor Liu suggests are the physiology and pathology for the osteoporosis at the same time. Furthermore, Professor Liu emphasizes the significance of Blood Stasis for woman,so the factor of Blood Stasis plays an especially important role in postmenopausal osteoporosis.Endothelins (ET) is a kind of vasoconstriction neuropeptide with multi- functions which has been studied and researched thoroughly recently ever since it was separated and purificated from the RPMI1640 of the aorto-endothelial cell of pig by a scholar named Yanagisawa from Japan in 1988. ET has been proved to be participated in the physiology and pathology of many diseases by a lot of studies and experiments,especially the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. In addition,ET is closely correlated with many cytokines such as estrogens, prostaglandin, N0,testosterone, IL-6>, 8,and so on which are closely related to postmenopausal osteoporosis. Blood Stasis of TCM has a correlation essentially with the pathogenesis of Old-Age diseases such as the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease;in the other hand,the alteration of plasma level of ET has been proved closely correlated with the formation of Blood Stasis of TCM by many studis.
