Acanthopanax senticosus(Rupr. Et. Maxim) Harms, as a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to treat diseases since the ancient time. In recent years, experts have done the deep study both in pharmacodynamics and in the chemical constituents. The stems have been enlarged as medical resources in China Pharmacopoeia (2000),so we studied the stems of A. senticosus .The pharmacological tests showed that the stems of Acanthopanax senticosus Harms had the anti-platelet aggregation activity, but the relevant literatures have not been found. To investigate the substance base of the activity,we studied the chemical constituents in the active part. Eleven compounds were seperated from the active part by the methods of solvent and chromatography. Eight of them were identified by spectroscopic methods, physiochemical properties and literature data. They are as following: vanillic acid, syringic acid, tyrosol, isovanillin, isofraxidin, syringin, feruloyl sucrose, l-nitroso-2-hydroxy-3-[2,3,4,5-tetrahydroxy pentyl]-5 , 6-dimethylindole.Among them, l-nitroso-2-hydroxy-3-[2,3,4,5-tetrahydroxypentyl]-5, 6-dimethylindol was a novel compound, tyrosol and isovanillin were isolated from the genus for the first time. Other compounds would be identified in the future.
