Sphaerophysa salsula (pall.) DC. is a plant widely distributed in the north of China, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia, which belongs to Leguminosae family. The whole plant can be used for medicine. It possesses the function of " recovering kidney, diuresis, detumescence and arrest seminal discharge". It is available in curing the kidney oedema, the disposition oedema, the liver sclerosis ascites and the blood vessel nerve oedema, and also available in the treatments of the postpartum haemorrhage, the womb relaxation and hypertension, etc. From the 95% ethanol extract of the pericarp of Sphaerophysa salsula (pall.) DC., by solvent extraction, repeated column chromatography and recrystallization, 26 constituents were isolated. On the basis of physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic analysis, 23 compounds were identified as flavonoids, sterols, triterpenoids, etc. Among them, two novel compounds are: stigmast-5-en-7β-ethoxy-3β-ol (22), sphaerin A(1,8-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-11H-benzofuro[2, 3-b] [1] benzopyran-11-one, 23).The known compounds are 4', 5-dihydroxy-3', 7-dimethoxyisoflavone (orobol 3', 7-dimethyl ether, 1), (+)-isomucronulatol (2), kaempferol (3), 4',7-dimethoxyisoflavone (daidzein dimethy ether, 4), (-)-pterocarpin (5), (-)-methylnissolin (6), calycosin (7), formononetin (8), 5a-stigmastan-3-one (9), 5α-stigmastane-3, 6-dione (10), stigmast-4-en-3-one (11), stigmast-4-ene-3β, 6β-diol(12), (24S)-cycloart-25-ene-3β, 24-diol (13), 9, 19-cycloart-23Z-ene-3β 25-diol (14), sphaerophysoneA ((24R)-7β,24,25-trihydroxyl-9,19-cycloart-1-en-3-one, 15), ergosterol peroxide(5α, 8α-epidioxyergosta-6, 22E-dien-3β-ol, 16), cerevisterol (ergosta-7, 22E-diene-3β, 5a, 6β-triol, 17), β-sitosterol (18),daucosterol (19), D-mannitol (20), stigmast-5-ene-3β,7α-diol (21). Among them, 13 compounds, such as 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 21 were isolated from this genus for the first time.A review on the UV, IR, NMR and MS characters of coumaronochromone was summarized based on the spectral data of the related compound isolated from the pericarp of Sphaerophysa salsula (pall.) DC. and the related references.
