Objective To investigate the changes and clinical significances of souble intercellular adhesion molecule-1(sICAM-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in children with Henoch-Schoenlein purpura(HSP).Methods Plasma sICAM-1 and VEGF were detected in 38 children with HSP in acute phase and 16 normal children by ELISA. The levels of plasma sICAM-1 and VEGF in different clinical categories of HSP were compared. Results (1) Plasma sICAM-1 levels in children with HSP in acute phase [(36. 72±6. 11)ng/ml] were significantly higher than those in healthy controls [(25.91±3. 71)ng/ ml](t=6. 57, P< 0. 01); plasma sICAM-1 levels [(40. 62±6. 55) ng/ml] with renal involvement of HSP were higher than those without renal involvement [(35. 33±3. 40)ng/ ml] (t=2. 512, P<0. 05); plasma sICAM-1 levels with gastrointestinal system involvement of acute phase [(37. 92±4. 34)ng/ml] were higher than those whithout gastrointestinal system involvement[(35. 64±7. 29) ng/ml], and there were no significant difference (t=1. 58,P>0. 05). (2)Plasma VEGF levels in children with HSP during the acute phase [(202. 71±126. 18) pg/ml] were markedly higher than those in healthy controls [(49. 86±24. 21)pg/ml], (t= 4. 783, p < 0. 01)]; as for plasma VEGF levels in acute phase, there were no significant differences between patients with renal involvement of HSP [(230. 71±74. 93 ) pg/ml] and those without renal involvement [(192. 70± 139. 83) pg/ml] (t=0. 814, P>0. 05); plasma VEGF levels in patients with gastrointestinal system involvement of acute phase [(280. 06±161. 49) pg/ml] were markedly higher than those without gastrointestinal system involvement[(152. 88 46. 43)pg/tnl] (t=2. 79,P< 0. 05); (3)Plasma sICAM-1 levels of acute phase of HSP were significantly positive correlated to plasma of VEGF levels(r=0. 484, P<0. 01).Conclusions Plasma sICAM-1 and VEGF in acute phase of HSP were significantly increased, and they were positive correlated to each other, which suggest that sICAM-1 and VEGF may play a crucial role in pathogenesis of HSP. sICAM-1 may have an important effct on changes of nephritis of HSP, meanwhile VEGF may have a close realationship with gastrointestinal system involvement of HSP.
