Objective To study the pharmacological effects of effective parts of AVL on ratty experimental atherosclerosis and to probe its mechanism. Methods The model of experimental atherosclerosis (MA) in rats was established by hyperlipoidal feed (85% common pellet +5% lard +10% yolk powder +0.5% sodiue cholate +0.2% Methyl- thiouracil), Normal control (NC) group fed common pellet, drug treated (DT) group fed Apocynum venetum L effective parts plus MA. Serum lipids and lipids oxidative peroxidation products (LPO) were analyzed with enzymatic methods after twelve week, blood pressure were measured with sphygmomano-meter, atherosclerosis changes in aortic were observed through light microscope. Result Each DT group was found that the level of serum lipids and LPO of ratty model was lower than that of MA group, the blood pressure could be lowerd prominently in other AVL effective parts group except tannin group, the effect of lowering blood pressure of tannin group much more prominently, while flavonoids group has remarkable effect of increasing bloodpressure. Through histopathological examination the degree of atherosclerotic lesion in aortic was reduced in DT groups, tannin group were significantly better than other group. Conclusion These data suggested that both flavnonoids and tannin of AVL have regulation of lipid metabolism and antioxidation action, and have inhibitory effect on the development of experimental atherosclerosis lesions in rat.
