The Role Of Leptin , Endothelin And Nitric Oxide In Progression Of Clinical Diabetic RetinopathyGraduate Gao ChunHuaTutor Zhao BaoZhenObjective: To investigate the roles of leptin (Lep),nitric (NO),endothelin(ET) ect in diabetic retinopathy(DR) for and treatment. Methods : The level of fasting serum leptin were measured in 54 DM patients and 44 healthy volunteers as the control,at the same lime plasma immunoreactive ET levels and serum NO levels were respectively determined by radioimmunoassay and nitroatreducase method in patients. Results: Patients' serum leptin levels(12.68 4.12) went up higher than those of the controls (6.34 4.04)(P<0.001). It also rose significantly higer in PDR group(39.81 7.67) than in theBDK group(15.48 5.59)(P<0.05). So did it in BDR group than in NDR group(6.66 3.62)(P<0.05). The levels of NO decreased nevertheless ET levels ascended as diabetic retinopathy deteriorated. Serum leptin levels was significantly and positively correlated with ET, urine microalbumin , HbAlcconcentration , serum triglyceride , nailfoldmicrocirculation(r=0.804,P<0.001;r=0.611,P<0.001;r=0.361,P=0.0073;r=0.445,P=0.0053; r=0.461, P<0.001),however, negative was found significantly between leptin and NO P<0.001).Conclusions: The level of leptin may indicate DR because the serum leptin level mounted as well as the diabetic retinopathy advanced. The correlations of ET and NO with leptin provide biochemical support for DR progression.Leptin also participates in ischemia-induced neovascularization. Such findings present potential novel modalities in treatment of DR.
