Invasion and metastasis are two important characters of malignant tumor,in two process, the apoptosis-inhibitory protein survivin play an important role. Purposes: To investigate the expression of survivin and its clinical significance in human transitional cell bladder carcinoma. Methods :Immunohistological chemistry method was used to detect survivin expression in 75 cases of bladder transitional cell carcinoma. The relationship between survivin expression and the clinicopathologic parameters, prognosis was retrospectively analyzed. Results: Survivin expression was not detected in healthy bladder mucosa.Survivin expression was positive in 35 of 75(46.7%).The survivin expression positive rate in grade I ,II and III tumors was 26.9(7/20) , 48.5%(16/33), 75.0%(12/16) and in stage Tis~T, and T2~T4 tumors being 34.2%(14/41) and 61.8%(21/34).The survivin expression positive rate in recurrent cases was 62.5%( 15/24) and in non-recurrent cases being 36.4%(16/44).The 5-year survival rate was 75.0%(51/68).The 5-year survival rate in patients with survivin positive expressed was 61.3%(19/31) and 86.5%(32/37) in patients with survivin negative expressed. The survivin expression positive rates were significantly higher in poorly differentiated andinvasive bladder cancer. Expression of survivin correlated well with histological grade -, clinical stage and prognosis. Conclusions:There was an important role of survivin expression in the development and for the progression of bladder cancer. Survivin expression could be used as a tumor marker for bladder cancer.
