PrefaceFunctional dyspepsia (FD) is a common syndrome. Some of the patients with FD present symptoms suggestive of delayed gastric emptying . So gastrointestinal hypomotility is considered one oi the pathogenesis. There are many Chinese herbs have the ability of bi - lateral regulation . In this study, we analysis the effect of Chinese herbs Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang (BXXXT) decoction and its component herbs on gastric emptying and small intestinal propulsion motility of big molecule chromogen Blue Dextron (BD) 2000 in the experimental animals, and analysis the degree of role of each component herb in the compound herb, and the mutual roles of them.Materials1. Experimental animals: 220 5 -week -old Kun Ming mice.2. Chinese herbs; Pineilia ternate 12g, Scutellaria baicalensis 9g, Rhizoma zingibens 9g, Ginseng 6g, Radix iiquiritiae 9g, Coptis chinensis 6g, 4 Fructus ziziphi jujubae. BXXXT is made of the 7 Chinese herbs . It is a kind of decoction.3. Maker;big molecule chromogen Blue Dextron (BD) 2000 ,compounded into 2% BD 2000 solution with distilled water ,4. Cisapride was compounded into 0. 15mg/ml cisapride solution with distilled water,5. 751 G spectrophotometer.MethodsMice were randomly allocated to control group, cisapride , BXXXT decoction respectively by oral everyday during a period of 2 weeks . All experimental animals fasted an overnight before study . We used big molecule chromogen Blue Dextron ( BD) 2000 as the gastrointestinal transporting marker to observe the dosage of chromogen remaining in stomach and small intestinal propulsion rate after 20 minutes giving mice chromogen makers by oral .We used the method of orthogonal design list L16(215) to determine the degree of role each component herb in the compound herb , and the mutual roles of them . There were 7 factors and each factor had 2 levels , level 1 standing for the concentration of herb being 0 , level 2 being certain concentration of each herb . We used different decoctions based the level of main effect of the orthogonal design L16(2 ) to make 16 experiments ,Results1. Compared with control group, the rates of gastric chromogen emptying in BXXXT group and cisapride group were all significantly increased and their small intestinal propulsion rates increased ( p <0. 05) . The gastric emptying rate and intestinal propulsion rate had no significant difference between BXXXT group and cisapride group (p >0.05)2. Based on the analysis of orthogonal design, we could conclude that the gastric emptying rate of seven component herbs increased successively; Ginseng , Fructus ziziphi jujubae, Radix liquiritiae . The others have the opposite effects. Radix liquiritiae could not increase the rate of gastric emptying. Pinellia ternate and Radix liquiritiae could not decrease the rate of gastric emptying . As a result, Ginseng and Fructus ziziphi jujubae can improve gastric emptying significantly; Rhizoma zingiberis together with Scutellaria baicalensis can inhibit gastric emptying.3. Based on the analysis of orthogonal design, we could conclude that therate of small intestinal propulsion of seven component herbs increased successively: Ginseng, Fructus ziziphi jujubae, Pinellia ternate. The others have the opposite effects. Pinellia ternata could not increase the rate of small intestinal propulsion . Coptis chinensis, Radix liquiritiae could not decrease the rate of small intestinal propulsion. As a result, Ginseng and Fructus ziziphi jujubae can improve small intestinal propulsion significantly; Rhizoma zingiberis together with Scutellaria baicalensis can inhibit small intestinal propulsion.DiscussionBXXXT is a traditional Chinese herb which was used in treatment of many gastrointestinal diseases . In this study we concluded that BXXXT could accelerate the gastric emptying and small intestinal propulsion.Recently, several studies of different doctors prove that BXXXT can bi -lateral regulate the function of stomach . In other words, when the stomach is inhibited the decoction can improve gastric emptying; while the function of stomach is active the decoction can inhibit it.There are both components that improve gastric emptying and small intestinal propulsion and components inhibit them.Based on the analysis of orthogonal design, the components increase gastric emptying successively; Ginseng, Fructus ziziphi jujubae, Radix liquiritiae; while decrease successively; Rhizoma zingiberis, Scutellaria baicalensis, Coptis chinensis, Pinellia ternate. The components improve small intestinal propulsion successively; Ginseng, Fructus ziziphi jujubae, Pinellia ternate; while inhibit successively: Rhizoma zingiberis, Scutellaria baicalensis, Radix liquiritiae, Coptis chinensis. We could conclude that Ginseng and Fructus ziziphi jujubae could prompt gastrointestinal motility significantly. Contrary, Rhizoma zingiberis and Scutellaria baicalensis could inhibit it significantly. Pinellia ternate, Radix liquiritiae, Coptis chinensis almost have no effect. The difference of the components is the cause of bi - lateral regulation.In this study, for gastric emptying Ginseng and Fructus ziziphi jujubae, Rhizoma zingiberis and Scutellaria baicalensis have coordination effect; for small...
