OBJETIVEThe aim of the study was to assess the effect of the management of resolving phlegm and removing blood stasis on pulmonary function, clinical symptoms and quality of life in patients with mild or moderate COPD in stable condition according to the retention of dampness and stasis syndrome in TCM.METHODS60 patients with mild or moderate COPD according to the retention of dampness and stasis syndrome in TCM were selected from the outpatient clinic. Patients were randomly assigned to the treating group (group T) or to the control group (group C) on a single-blind basis. Group T was treated by Chinese herb Decoction (the principle is resolving phlegm and removing blood stasis) combination with taking slow-release aminophylline orally, and group C was treated only by slow-release aminophylline.RESULTSClinical symptoms had been improved significantly in group T(P <0.01)which has significant difference after 6 months compared with group C(P <0.05).As for the result of blood gas analysis, group T and group C could both improve the PaO2 and reduce the PaCO2 (P <0.05). And there was significant difference in group T after 6 month treatment compared with group C (P<0.05).After the study period, there were no significant differences in spirometry results in either group. But from the result we could know that FEV1 and FEV1% in the group T was ascending slightly after the period, while FEVl and FEV1% in group C were descending slightly. The quality of life-the total mean score of QOL(TMS), general activity score(F1S), social activity score(F2S), depression score(F3S). and anxiety score(F4S) had been improved significantly in group T(P <0.05), with significantly differences after 6 month treatment compared with group C(P <0.05, P <0.01).
