ObjectiveThe aim of the study was to assess the effect of the management of nourishing liver and kidney on clinical symptoms and Nitric Oxide in synovial fluid in patients with knee osteoarthritis according to deficiency of liver and kidney syndrome in TCM, to explain preliminarily the mechanism of treating and preventing osteoarthritis with the Chinese drug. Methods38 patients with osteoarthritis according to deficiency of liver and kidney syndrome in TCM were randomly assigned to the Chinese herbs group or to the control group. The Chinese herbs group was treated with the Chinese herb decoction "Bu Gan Shen Fang"(the principle is nourishing liver and kidney). The patients of the control group were received therapy with celebrex (200mg,qd). Results1. The curative effect of 2 groupsThe data was compared with Ridit analysis (R =0.955, u=5.231, P<0.01) which suggests that the clinical effects of Chinese herbs group was better than that of the control group .2. The effect of treatment of 2 groups on clinical symptoms scores in osteoarthritis After treatment, in the Chinese herbs group the scores of main clinical symptomssuch as pain, swelling, pain while bend standing or squat, pain while upstairs or downstairs, knee stiff, range of motion of knee, soreness and weakness of waist and knees, aversion to cold and the total scores decreased remarkably (P<0.01); In control group, the scores of some clinical symptoms such as pain, swelling decreased, but knee stiff, range of motion of knee, soreness and weakness of waist and knees, aversion to cold have no significant difference.
