Objective To culture and identify Gardnerella vaginalis of men with nongonococcal urethritis in Jinan city and to analysis the sequence of ITS-23S rRNA genome of them.To find the relation of Gardnerella vaginalis with nongonococcal urethritis in men. Methods Special culture mediums and polymerase chain reaction method were used to detect Gardnerella vaginalis of men with nongonococcal urethritis in Jinan city. The partial Gardnerella vaginalis genome isolated from 3 patients with nongonococcal urethritis were purified and sequenced. Results The sequence analysis showed high homogeneity among 3 isolates from Jinan and between Jinan isolates and the isolates in Belkums' report. Gardnerella vaginalis was detected in 60 (52.6%) of 114 nongonococcal urethritis cases with special culture mediums and 69 (60.5%) with polymerase chain reaction method. All of the urethral secretion were found no Neisseria gonorrheae, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasm hominis, Chlamydia trachomatis, Candida albicans and trichomoniasis. Gardnerella vaginalis was detected in 5( 14.7%)of 34 control subjects. Significant differences (p<0.01) were found between nongonococcal urethritis group and nonurethritis group. The positive rate had significant differences among men with nongonococcal urethritis and different numeral sexual partners. Conclusion There is no significant difference in ITS-23S rRNA genome ofGardnerella vaginalis between the isolates from Jinan and those from Belkums' report. This implicates that they belong to the same genotype. The results suggested that Gardnerella vaginalis play a role in causing male nongonococcal urethritis. To detect Gardnerella vaginalis of men with nongonococcal urethritis can conduct the diagnosis and therapy of some urethritis.
