Objective: To assess expression and significance of excision repaircross complementing genes 1(ERCC1) and human Mut L homologue 1(hMLH1)in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods: ERCC1 and hMLH1 proteins wereassayed with immunohistochemical techniquean in cases of NPC and casesof chronic inflammation of nasopharyngeal epithelium(CINE). Result:The expression rates of ERCC1 ,hMLH1 were 69%,77% respectively in CINEs,which were significantly higher than those were 45.63 % ,55.34 %respectively in NPCs (P<0.05). The expression of ERCC1, hMLH1 were notsignificantly correlated with each other in CINEs and NPCs. Theexpression of ERCC1, hMLH1 in NPCs were significantly correlated withstage of tumor, stage of lymphoid node, clinical stage, recurrence andmetastasis(P<0.05). The expression of ERCC1, hMLH1 in group ofrecurrence and metastasis were significantly lower than those in groupof no recurrence and metastasis. The risk of recurrence and metastasisin negative group of ERCC1, hMLH1 was higher than that in positive groupof ERCC1, hMLH1.The chemotherapy response rates in positive andnegative group of ERCC1 were 54.55%,64.29% respectively. The responserates in positive and negative group of hMLH1 were 69.23%,50.00%respectively. But there were all no statistical significance. Conclusion: The expressions of ERCC1,hMLH1 were significantlydecreased in NPCs. ERCC1,hMLH1 will probably become prognosticbiological parameters of NPC. The relationship of chemotherapyresponse and ERCC1 ,hMLH1 will be worth approaching.
