Objective To investigate the roles of Interleukin-18 (IL-18) in the laryngeal carcinomas by determining tissue expression and serum levels of IL-18 in laryngeal carcinoma. It has been suggested that IL-18 might contribute to the study of defense against tumor cells growth and treat animals for their carcinoma. It might offer new therapeutic options in laryngeal cancer in the future. Methods We measured IL-18 concentration in sera of 22 laryngeal carcinoma patients and 10 health control subjects with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). And the gene expression differences of IL-18 between fresh laryngeal cancer tissues and their surrounding normal mucosa was analyzed by RT-PCR in the same patients. Results The serum concentration of IL-18 in patients with laryngeal carcinoma[(68.44±39.42)pg/ml] was significantly higher compared to health control subjects[(28.47±2.29)pg/ml] (t' =4.74,p<0.01). As RT-PCR analysis of the cancer tissues exhibited no IL-18 mRNA expression, but 9 cases showed expression in their surrounding normal mucosa . Conclusions In the present investigation, IL-18 serum levels were significantly enhanced in patients with laryngeal cancer compared to healthy controls. These results suggest that IL-18 participates in the immune responses during the progression of laryngeal carcinoma. IL-18 production may be induced in response to tumor cells or other factors related to tumor growth. As RT-PCR analysis of cancer tissue exhibited...
