Objective To determine the effect of VPA on glycometabolism in children with epilepsy by observing the change of weight, BMI, blood glucose, insulin and insulin resistance(IR) after VPA mono-therapy. Methods 45 normal children were selected as the control group. 45 cases with VPA mono-therapy in future were included as the observation group I, and the observation group II was that whose patients were treated with VPA mono-therapy for 3 months, while the observation group III were those who had been treated with VPA for 6 months. Body weight, BMI, blood glucose, insulin and IR index were separately detected. Results 1.Compared the control group with the observation group I, II, III, body weight was 17.23±4.10(kg),16.75±3.89(kg),20.57±5.53 (kg),22.23±4.69(kg) respectively; BMI was 18.45 ±2.36(kg/m~2),18.75 ±2.94(kg/m~2),20.98±2.42(kg/m~2),21.46±3.36 (kg/m~2) respectively; the serum of glucose was 4.35 ±0.37(mmol/L),4.43 ±0.42(mmol/L),3.54 ±0.36(mmol/L),3.79±0.51(mmol/L) respectively; insulin level was 4.88±1.34 (mU/L),4.41±2.02(mU/L),7.73±3.44(mU/L), 6.45±4.11(mU/L) respectively; IR index was 0.91±0.14,0.98±0.21,1.10±0.17,1.07±0.23 respectively. 2. There was no difference among the changes of weight, BMI, blood glucose, insulin and IR index comparing the control group with the observation group I, II, III(P>0.05). Compared the observation group I with II, there was a significant increase of weight, BMI, insulin(P<0.01), and blood glucose fell(P<0.05), but no changes of IR index(P>0.05). Compared the observation group I with III, there was a significant increase of weight, BMI, insulin(P<0.01), but no changes of blood glucose, IR index(P>0.05). Compared the observation group II with III, there was no significant difference of weight, BMI, blood glucose, IR index(P>0.05), whereas insulin level was increased(P<0.05). Food appetite added Compared the control group with he observation group I, II, III(P<0.05). Conclusion VPA mono-therapy can raise the food appetite and body weight, and lower the fasting glucose, and lead to hyperinsulinemia in children with epilepsy, especially in the first 3 months after VPA being prescribed, but insulin resistance did not exist. These changes were mutually affected.
