Background and Objective: Glucocorticoid-induced bone loss is the most predictable and debilitating complication of prolonged administration of systemic corticosteroids.It has been shown that patients treated with glucocorticoids have an increased risk of osteoporosis fractures , resulting in marked morbidity, particularly in elderly individuals. Once the osteoporosis has been formed, calcium,calcitriol,calcitonin,,fluoride and hormone may have roles as therapies but documentation of their efficacy is less satifactory. It is incumbent on all physicians supervising long-term glucocorticoid therapy to ensure that the effective prevention and treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis(GIO) are instituted, where appropriate.Bionics pulsed electromagnetic fields(BEMF) hase many characteristics that correctly simulate the electromagnetic fields in body. In my experiment,I have investigated the preventive therapeutic effect of BEMF in GIO by bone mineral density(BMD), biomechanical property, histological,et al, and explored the biomoleculogic mechanism by TGFβ1,bFGF,IL-6 firstly.Methods: seventy two 3-month old female wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups—BEMF group (group A, n=18), calcitonin group(group B,n=18), desamethasone group(group C,n=18)and control group(group D,n=18). Rats in groupD were raised normally and received the same amount of normal saline. Rats in groupCwere injected with desamethasone only(1mg/kg,im,2/w). Rats in group B and group A were injected with calcitonin (2IU/kg, im.,1/d) and irradiated with BEMF respectively for preventative therapy ,at the same time when rats in both were injected with desamethasone (1mg/kg,im,2/w). The BMD,biomechanical property, histological of rates were measured at different times(4w,8w,12w) in order to observe their changes, and observe the changes of TGFβ1,bFGF,IL-6 to explore the biomoleculogic mechanism.
