Objectives: To detect the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1(ICAM-1) and matrix-metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) in the lower uterine segment during term labor and preterm labor, thereby investigate the role of ICAM-1 and MMP-9 in the process of term labor and preterm labor. Methods: The lower uterine segment tissue specimens were obtained from 15 cases with term in labor( I ), 15 cases with term before labor( II), 15 cases with preterm in labor (III) and 15 cases with preterm before labor(IV). Immunohistochemistry (with SP method) and computer image analysis technology were utilized to measure the expression of ICAM-1 and MMP-9 in the lower uterine segment tissue specimens.Results: 1) In this study, we detected expression of ICAM-1 localized to the vascular endothelium in the lower uterine segment every group. In II group , mean area of ICAM-1 expression was 186.75±40.00 μ m~2,mean density was 0.21±0.04 and IOD was 38.66±8.16; In I group , mean area of ICAM-1 expression was 251.35± 75.95 μm~2,mean density was 0.25±0.06 and IOD was 61.92±21.97. Every parameter(mean area, mean density and IOD) ,in I group was higher significantly than in II group (P< 0.001) . In IV group, mean area of ICAM-1 expression was 201.82±39.36μm~2,mean density was 0.22±0.04 and IOD was 42.73±6.43; In IIIgroup, mean area of ICAM-1 expression was 317.09±100.37 μm~2,mean density was 0.26±0.07and IOD was 80.47±22.82.
