Objective: To study the effect of Elemene on the proliferation of the rabbit lens epithelial cells (RLECs) in vitro and to evaluate the drugs used for posterior capsular opacification (PCO) after cataract extration.Method: (1) RLECs were cultured in vitro and we observed cells morphological changes with light microscope to calculate the cells growth regulation. (2) Elemene of different concentrations was added to RLECs of the second, third, fourth generation. The effect of elemene on rabbbit lens epithelial cells in vitro was observed. Results: (1) With the cells counting method, the cells growth was in logarithm growth stage on the second to seventh day. The peak of growth was on the seventh day. (2) Elemene could significantly inhibit the proliferation of RLECs. With the increasement of dose and time, the inhibitory rate increased. Conclusion: (1) Elemene could significantly inhibit the proliferation of RLECs. With the increasement of dose and time, the inhibitory rate increased. (2) Elemene might be a candidate to prevent the posterior capsular opacification .
