Capillary electrophoresis(CE) has been developed as a kind of rising technology since it came out in the 1980s. For its unique advantages, CE has become one of essential methods in various fields. Especially in the field of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) analysis, it is playing a big role and alluring. In the prepreface, this paper started with the description of research of CE technology including principle, characteristics, several types of detectors and applications. Then the modern TCM research was discussed generally and it made a point of the introduction about application of CE in TCM analysis. Finally the intention and meaning of this paper were simply explained. In the chapter 2, electrcochemical detection method(CE-ED) has been established for simultaneous determination of seven active ingredients including (+)-Catechin, rutin, gentisic acid, vallinic acid, salicylic acid, quercetin, protocatechuic acid in the stems and roots of Gaultheria leucocarpa var. yunnanensis and its medicinal preparation in this work. The effects of working potential, pH and concentration of runnmg buffer, separation voltage and injection time on CE-ED were systematically investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the seven analytes could be completely separated within 23 min in a borax running buffer (pH 8.7). A good linear relationship was obtained over three orders of magnitude with detection limits (S/N = 3) ranging from 5×10-8 g mL-1 to 3×10-7 g mL-1 for the analytes. The proposed method was successfully used in the analysis of real samples after a relatively simple extraction procedure, and the assay results were satisfactory. We can see, in the chapter 3, a method based on capillary electrophoresis with electrochemical detection has been developed for the separation and determination of isovanillic acid, vanillic acid, quercetin, rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid and protocatechuic acid in origanum vulgare L. and its medicinal preparations for the first time. The effects of working electrode potential, pH and concentration of running buffer, separation voltage and injection time on CE-ED was investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the analytes could be separated in a 50mmol L-1 borate buffer (pH 8.7) within 21 min. A 300μm diameter carbon disk electrode has a good response at +0.95 V (vs. SCE) for all analytes. The response was linear over three orders of magnitude with detection limits (S/N = 3) ranging from 4×10-8 g mL-1 to 2×10-7 g mL-1 for the analytes. The method has been successfully applied to the analysis of realsample, with satisfactory results."Shanzha" has been used ethnically as an effective crude drug in China. It has long been used as a folk medicine and is described by many pharmacopoeias. Pharmacological and toxicological studies have demonstrated that consumption of hawthorn fruit is associated with long-term medicinal benefits on the cardiovascular function. In the chapter 4, a simple, reliable and reproducible method, based on capillary electrophoresis with electrochemical detection has been developed for the separation and determination of epicatechin, kaempferol, chlorogenic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, quercetin and protocatechuic acid in hawthorn for the first time. The effects of working electrode potential, pH and concentration of running buffer, separation voltage and injection time on CE-ED were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the analytes could be separated in a 60mmol L-1 borate buffer (pH 8.7) within 21min. A 300μm diameter carbon disk electrode has a good response at +0.95 V (vs. SCE) for all analytes. The response was linear over three orders of magnitude with detection limits (S/N = 3) ranging from 3×10-8 g mL-1 to 2×10-7 g mL-1 for the analytes and the correlation coefficient is above 0.9991. Two samples were monitored with satisfactory results.
