Objective: To study the expression of Leptin in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)and proliferative vitreous retinopathy (PVR) and the correlation of Leptin with theoccurrence and development of PDR and PVR.Methods: Immunohistochemistric technique was used to detect the expression of Leptin inepiretinal membrane of PDR(phaseV,VI) and PVR. ELISA was used to detect theconcentration of Leptin in the patient's serum, ocular aqueous humor and vitreous humor. Alldata were compared and analyzed by SPSS 13.0.Results :Immunohistochemistrically, The expression of Leptin in epiretinal membrane ofPDR(V,VI phase ) was positive in 18 cases out of 30 cases (The positive rate was 60%). Theexpression of Leptin in epiretinal membrane of PVR was positive in 3 cases out of 20 (Thepositive rate was 15%). The concentration of Leptin was significantly higher in the serum, ocular aqueous humor and vitreous humor of the patients with PDR than the control group(P<0.05). There was no significant difference of the concentration of Leptin in serum, aqueoushumor and vitreous humor between the patients with PVR and the control group (P>0.05).Conlusion:Leptin may play an important role in the occurrence and development of PDR,butwas not significantly correlated to the development of PVR.
