Objective: To study the effects of brain ischemia injury on cell proliferation andnestin expression in subependymal zone (SEZ) and cerebral cortex of the adult rats. Methods: 20 male wistar rats were divided randomly into the control group(10)and the cerebral ischemic group(10), and the middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO)model of rat was maded by the thread embolizing. On the seventh day, the brain of ratswere obtained through decapitation after 5-bromodeoxyuridine was injected. The Brdupositive cells and nestin positive cells in SEZ and cerebral cortex were observed.withimmunohistochemistry technique. Results: Comparision to the control group, the Brdu and nestin positive cells inSEZ of rats were obviously increased after cerebral ischemia; the Brdu and nestin positivecells increased significantly in cerebral cortex, P<0.01.Conclusion: Brain ischemia injury can activate neural stem cells in SEZ andcerebral cortex. It is suggested that neural stem cells in SEZ and cerebral cortex of ratsmay participate in the nervous reparative process after brain ischemia injury.
