Objective To detect the expression of Syndecan-1 and E-cadherin (E-cad) in epithelial ovarian tumor and to evaluate whether these alterations could provide causative informations. Methods The expressions of Syndecan-1 and E-cad were observed in 10 benign ovarian tumor samples, 10 borderline ovarian tumor samples, 56 epithelial ovarian carcinoma samples and 14 corresponding omentum metastasis samples using streptavidin-peroxidase immunohistochemistry. Results 1. The positive rates of Syndecan-1 in benign ovarian tumors, borderline ovarian tumors and ovarian carcinoma samples was 80% (8/10), 60% (6/10), 42.86% (24/56) respectively. There was significant difference between benign ovarian tumors and carcinoma samples(P=0.003). There was no signicant difference between others (P>0.05). In epithelial ovarian carcinoma, no relations was found between Syndecan-1 expression and age, histological type (P>0.05). The positive rate of Syndecan-1 was significant difference between clinical stage, tumor grade, and lymph node metastasis (P=0.029, P=0.037, P=0.034).2. The positive rates of E-cad in benign ovarian tumors, borderline ovarian tumors and carcinoma samples tissues was 90% (9/10), 70% (7/10), 57.14% (32/56) respectively. There was significant difference between benign ovarian tumors and carcinoma samples (P=0.0048). There was no signicant difference between others (P>0.05). In epithelial ovarian carcinoma, no relations was found between E-cad expression and age, histological type (P>0.05). The positive rate of E-cad was significant difference between clinical stage, tumor grade, lymph node metastasis and distant places metastasis (P=0.048, P=0.013, P=0.02,P=0.013).3. The positive rates of Syndecan-1, E-cad in epithelial ovarian carcinoma were 42.86% and 57.14% respectively, both of which were higher than there were in omental metastasis (14.29% and 21.43% respectively), the difference were significant (P<0.05).4. The expression of Syndecan-1 and E-cad in ovarian carcinoma existed significant correlation (Rs=0.350, P<0.01).Conclusions 1. The expression of Syndecan-1 and E-cad may play an important role in the generation and development of epithelial ovarian tumor.2. In epithelial ovarian carcinoma, the expressions of Syndeean-1, E-cad are correlated with invasion and metastasis, which may be two of markers of poor prognosis.3. Syndecan-1 and E-cad may work in coordination in the generation and development of ovarian carcinoma.
