Multiple Factors Analysis Of Recurrence And Metastasis Following Curative Surgery For Colorectal Cancer

Objective: this study was to investigate the clinicopathologic factors related to recurrence and metastasis following curative surgery for colorectal cancer,in order to improve the treatment effects. Methods: The clinicopathologic factors and follow-up data of 455 cases of colorectal cancers after surgical treatment 1995 through 2003 were retrospectively analyzed by univariate and multivariate methods. Results: There are 116 patients that were occured recurrence and metastasis after radical operations in a total of 455 patients with colorectal cancer.recurrence,distant metastasis and both them were occurred in 49 patients 42.2%, 57 patients 49.1% and 10 patients 8.6%,respectively.Liver and lung metastasis were occurred in 29 patients 43.3%, 21 patients 31.3% , respectively. The middle recurrence and metastasis time for all patients was 15.6 months and 2 and 3 year recurrence and metastasis rates after radical operations were 70.7%, 90.5%, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that tumor location, tumor size, ages, gross findings, Dukes' stage, lymph node metastasis and histological differentiation were significantly associated with recurrence and metastasis. Multivariate analysis showed that tumor location and Dukes' stage were prognostic factors for recurrence and metastasis after operation. tumor location was closely related to local recurrence. Dukes' stage was related to distant metastasis. Conclusions: tumor location and Dukes' stage are important risk factors for recurrence and metastasis after curative surgery for the patients with colorectal carcinoma. Dukes' stage is an important prognostic factor for distant metastasis. The patients with rectal cancer should be considered to have additional risks for local recurrence.
