Object: To explore the significane of expression of maspin in larynx squamous cell carainoma(LSCC).Method: SP immunohistochemical method was used to assess the expression of maspin in 5 cases normal larynx mucous, l4 cases of polyp of vocal cord, 11 cases of larynx papilloma and 54 cases of LSCC tissue. And RT-PCR was used to detecte the expression of maspin mRNA and E-cadherin mRNA in 15 cases of LSCC tissue. The relationship between maspin and E-cadherin was evaluated.Result: Positive expression was found in all the normal cases, high rate of positive expression was found in polyp of vocal cord cases and larynx papilloma cases (78.57%, 81.82%). While in 54 cases of LSCC tissue, the expression of maspin protein downregulate to 35.37% (p<0.01). In the group of LSCC, the expression of maspin in T1+T2 stages was higher than that in T3+T4 (P= 0.048). The expression of maspin protein in LSCC with the metastasis of lymph nods was lower than that in LSCC without metasasis (p=0.037). While the age of the patients and the histological grade didn't change the expression of maspin protein obviously. The expression of maspin mRNA also correlates to the T stages (p=0.034) and metastasis of lymph nods in LSCC patiens (p= 0.047), but not to the histological grades (p=0.424). The expression of E-cadherin mRNA shows no correlation to the T stages (p=0.072) and histological grade (p=0.849 ), while correlates to metastasis of lymph nods in LSCC patiens (p=0.043). The expression of maspin in LSCC patiens shows positive correlation to that of E-cadherin.Conclusion: Maspin maybe a suppressor to the cancergenerisis and progression of LSCC.
