Heterosmilax japonica Kunth ,a traditional Chinese medicine in common use with its rhizomes, is a member of Liliaceae. Abundant in natural resources, the plant has a wide distribution in China. In this dissertation, the chemical constituents and anti-inflammatory effect of Heterosmilax japonica were primarily researched, its quality control method was also discussed.Seven compounds were separated from the rhizomes of Heterosmilax japonica by using open-column, preparative TLC methods et al. The structures were identified on the ground of physical, chemical properties and spectral data. The seven compounds respectively areβ-sitosterol(Ⅰ) , tetracosanoic acid(Ⅱ), eicosanoic acid(Ⅲ),β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucoside(Ⅳ), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid(Ⅴ), palmitic acid (Ⅵ)and rhein(Ⅶ). Compounds (Ⅱ) and (Ⅲ) were isolated from the plant for the first time.Liposoluble components and fatty acids from Heterosmilax japonica were studied by GC-MS for the first time. Sixtytwo compounds were identified and fiftyseven compounds were isolated from the plant for the first time. The content of diosgenin in Heterosmilax japonica were determined by HPLC.The method could be used for the quality control of this herb. The preliminary pharmacological experiments of Heterosmilax japonica showed that its effect of dispelling tumidity was not apparent .However,Heterosmilax japonica could apparently retard the pathologies of tissue synovium and joint cartilage caused by inflammation.
