| [Objective]To observe the effect of Jin Fu An Decoction in improving quality of life of elderly patients with non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) in III or IV stage.[Methods]60 elderly patients with medium or late stage non-small cell lung cancer were divided randomly into three groups. In Group I , 20 patients were treated with Jin Fu An Decoction alone. In Group II, 20 patients were treated with chemotherapy ( single drug with Vinorelbine or Gemzar or Docetaxel ) alone. In GroupIII, 20 patients were treated with Jin Fu An Decoction and chemotherapy together. Six items, including physical status, social / family status, intercourse with physicians, emotional status, functional status and additional concerning status, were investigated and analyzed by using Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-lung(FACT-L). Each patient was measured quality of life 5 times, before the treatment when the patient had hospitalized within 24 hours , the first day of treatment, the 14th day of treatment, the 28th day of treatment, the 42th day of treatment, and the therapeutic efficacy of the three groups were evaluated after six weeks of treatment.[Results]In the physical status, the scores among the three groups of all time-point was that Group I was superior to GroupIII(P<0.05), and GroupIII was superior to Group II (P<0. 05). In the emotional status, the scores among the three groups of all time-point was that Group I and GroupIII was superior to Group II (P<0. 05). However, Group I and GroupIIIcompared with no significant difference (P>0.05). In the functional status and additional concerning status, the scores among the three groups of all time-point was that Group I was superior to Group III(P<0. 05), and GroupIII was superior to Group II (P<0. 05). [Conclusion]The Jin Fu An Decoction can elevate the quality of life of the elderly patients with medium or late stage non-small cell lung cancer, especially in the physical status.
