Objective To investigate the expression of SYN and GFAP in rat hippocampal formation after moderate traumatic brain injury following acute alcoholism. Methods 72 healthy adult SD male rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: Group N (control group with sham-operated), Group A (acute alcoholism), Group T (moderate traumatic brain injury) and Group A+T (moderate traumatic brain injury following acute alcoholism). Acute alcoholism was performed by intraperitoneal injection of alcohol (2.5g.kg-1) in rats. Moderate traumatic brain injury was produced with the improved Feeney's method (600g.cm) at 2h after acute alcoholism. Animals were killed at 6h, 24h and 48h after trauma. And their brains were used for determination of the expression of SYN and GFAP by immunohistochemistry method and observation on morphological changes by neutral red staining in CA1 area of hippocampus. Results By neutral red staining, the neurons of Group T and Group A+T in CA1 area of hippocampus appeared body swelling and disorderly arrangement at 6h, and such morphologic change in group T appeared obvious compared with group A+T.The expression of SYN in Group T and Group A+T were higher than that in Group N and Group A (P<0.01). The expression of SYN in Group T were higher than that in Group A+T at 6 h, 24h and 48h (P<0.05).The expression of GFAP in Group T and Group A+T were higher than that in Group N and Group A (P<0.01). The expression of GFAP in Group T were higher than that in Group A+T at 6h and 24h (P<0.05).Conclusion Acute alcoholism plays neuroprotective roles at early stage of moderate traumatic brain injury, which may be related to astrocyte inhibited by alcohol so as to reduce inflammatory reaction.
