OBJECTIVE To explore the semen quality characteristics of premarital males in Shenzhen area by retrospective analysis, and find out the changes of the semen indexes in the past 3 years. And investigate the semen quality characteristics by comparing to other native city.METHODS Semen samples were collected from 962 premarital males. The samples were analyzed by CASA system binding manual method with standard methods recommended by WHO, in order to measure the parameters included semen volume, Semen liquefaction time, pH value, sperm density, total sperm count, sperm viability, percentage of sperm with different motility. Software SPSS10.0 was used to summarize the characteristics of the semen quality.RESULTS The means of semen indexes of 962 premarital males were: semen volume (3.20±0.98)ml, semen density (56.74±38.69)×106/ml, total sperm count (178.44±124.28)×106/ml, rate of sperm a+b(42.56±14.82)%, sperm viability (59.69±17.44)%。As for the percentages of the quality indexes that met WHO standards, semen volume was 96.67%, semen density 88.67%, total sperm count 89.50%, liquefaction time 96.99%, pH value 96.88%, percentage of sperm a+b 73.18%, sperm viability 82.54%.Those which accorded with all the WHO standards accounted for only 66.11%. All the means of semen quality indexes of premarital males in shenzhen showed statistical differences when compared to the data of other 7 native provinces, and the values of the means were lower except total sperm count. All the means of semen quality indexes of premarital males in shenzhen showed statistical differences when compared to the data of Guangdong province except semen volume. And the values of the indexes with statistical difference were lower than those of Guangdong.Sperm density, total sperm count, sperm viability and percentage of sperm a+b between year 2005 and 2007 showed statistical differences. While there was no statistical difference in all semen quality indexes between year 2005 and 2006, and year 2006 and 2007 either. The means of semen indexes from year 2005 to 2007:Year 2005:semen density (62.78±42.40)×106/ml, sperm viability (58.34±13.89)%, total sperm count (196.50±129.87)×106/ml, percentage of sperm a+b (41.21±10.88)%.Year 2006:semen density (56.56±38.80)×106/ml, sperm viability (59.88±17.86)%, total sperm count (177.42±128.10)×106/ml, percentage of sperm a+b (42.31±15.37)%.Year 2007:semen density (52.96±35.45)×106/ml, sperm viability (60.34±18.95)%, total sperm count (167.83±114.12)×106/ml, percentage of sperm a+b (43.77±16.25)%.When compared to the related data of Qingdao, The means of semen quality indexes, such as semen volume, total sperm count and percentage of sperm a, showed statistical differences, and the value were higher. The abnormal percentage of semen quality indexes including semen volume, sperm density, sperm viability, pH value and liquifaction time showed statistical differences when compared to the data of Qingdao, while the abnormal percentage of sperm motility did not.CONCLUSIONS The semen quality of premarital males in Shenzhen area is generally consistent with the WHO standards, though lower when compared to the data of 7 native provinces and Guangdong province. Further more, the semen quality of premarital males in Shenzhen declined during year 2005 and 2007. In addition, the semen quality of Shenzhen area is better than that of Qingdao.
