Objective:To investigate the clinical effect of warm needling therapy, using electroacupuncture as the control,in the treatment of simple obesity of the spleen deficient syndrome with phlegm and fluid retention.Method:All qualified patients were selected from LongXing Chinese Medical Clinic in Taiwan according to the criteria as per the Fifth National Symposium in Obesity held in 1997.The diagnostic criteria of the Chinese medical syndromes were according to that of the spleen deficient syndrome with phlegm and fluid retention as per"The Guide to Research in New and Chinese Drugs". A total of 60 patients were randomly divided to treatment(warm needling)and control(electroacupuncture)groups. The selected acupoints were the same in both groups:guanyuan, qihai, tianshu, zhongwan, zusanli, yinlingquan, fenglong. The patients were treated 3 times per week;4 weeks equal one course of treatment, and they were treated for a total of 2 courses. At the end of treatment, the patients'body mass index(BMI),waistline, hipline and waist-hip ratio(WHR)were assessed.According to the criteria as per the Fifth National Symposium in Obesity, the treatment's effectiveness was assessed.Results:1.The total effective rates of the treatment and control groups were 80.0% and 76.6%,respectively.2.After treatment, the patients' weight and BMI in both groups decreased significantly(p<0.05)however,the difference between the groups was not statistically significant(p>0.05). 3.After treatment, all patients' waistline and hipline decreased significantly(p<0.05);however the WHR was not significantly different after treatment(p>0.05).4.After treatment, the waistline in the treatment group significantly decreased as compared with the control group(p<0.05)5.The overall symptoms in the patients improved after treatment, especially that of the gastrointestinal signs. The before and after effect was significant in both groups(p<0.05).
