Objectives To investigate the plasma visfatin levels in type 2 diabetic mellitus(T2DM)and T2DM with macrovascular complications. To analyze the influencing factors of visfatin. Methods All the 140 subjects were divided into 3 groups(60 for T2DM with macrovascular complications, 50 for T2DM without macrovascular complications and 30 for control, respectively. The body height, body weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, and blood pressure were measured.Their plasma visfatin levels was assayed in ELISA once. Meanwhile, plasma glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin , and lipids were assayed. The plasma visfatin levels among three groups were compared , and the factors affecting the plasma visfatin were analyzed. Results The plasma visfatin levels were 2.14±0.66ng/ml,1.81±0.51ng/ml, 1.00±0.33ng/ml,respectively. Compared with the control group ,the plasma visfatin levels in group of T2DM with macrovascular complications and T2DM without macrovascular complications were significantly increased (P<0.001). The plasma visfatin levels in group of T2DM with macrovascular complications were higher T2DM without macrovascular complications. The differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The levels of plasma visfatin was positively correlated to waist circumference, waist hip ratio, and triglyceride (r=0.295, P <0.01;r =0.186, P <0.05; r =0.206, P <0.05),and negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in T2DM (r=-0.291, P<0.01).Multiple regression analysis showed that waist circumference and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were independent correlated factors influencing plasma visfatin levels .Conclusions The levels of plasma visfatin in T2DM is significantly increased, and T2DM with macrovascular complications becomes to a more higher. The results suggest that the levels of plasma visfatin is correlated to T2DM and T2DM with macrovascular complications. The correlation between plasma visfatin with waist hip ratio and waist circumference suggested plasma visfatin may participate metabolic diseases resulted from central obesity.
