Objective: To discuss the functional and structural changes of the heart in patients with lone atrial fibrillation (LAF) by evaluation of amino-N-terminal pro-plasma brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels. Methods: The experiment involved in 68 patients who admitted the 1st affiliated hospital of Dalian Medical University from May 2007 to January 2009. The 68 patients were divided into 2 groups, one was lone atrial fibrillation (LAF) group (34 patients) and the other was paroxysmal supra- ventricular tachycardia (PSVT) group (34 patients). Lone atrial fibrillation group was divided into two subgroups, persistent atrial fibrillation group and paroxymal atrial fibrillation group. The plasma NT-proBNP concentra- tions were measured in the morning for all the patients on empty stomach and quiescent condition .Results: The plasma NT-proBNP level of LAF group was higher than that of PSVT group (P<0.05). The plasma NT-proBNP level of persistent atrial fibrillation group was higher than that of paroxymal atrial fibrillation group (P<0.05). The plasma NT-proBNP levels of both persistent atrial fibrillation group and paroxymal atrial fibrillation group were higher than that of PSVT group (P<0.05).Conclusions: The plasma NT-proBNP level in patients with LAF was elevated. Compared to patients with paroxymal atrial fibrillation, the plasma NT-proBNP level in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation was elevated. The results revealed that atrial fibrillation can influence the level of the plasma NT-proBNP.
