ObjectiveTo study the nutritional status and intellectual development of children aged 2-4 in Huining, and then to evaluate the subjects'nutritional status, intelligence development, and basing on these information to discuss the correlation between nutrition status and intelligence development, so as to offer basis information for promoting nutritional status and mental development, and for providing scientific information for scientific research and policy making.MethodThe objects, consistent with conditions, were randomly selected by cluster sampling in 7 towns of Huining. Intelligence development test and nutrition survey (including dietary survey, anthropometric measure, nutritional status laboratory examine and children feeding patterns) were put into the practice, and subjects' backing resources were investigated with a self-designed questionnaire. With Correlation analysis to evaluate the relationship between intelligence development and nutritional statusResults1 Nutritional status(1) Food intakeSubjects have various kinds of foods. Grain and tuberous crop were the main food. The intakes of animality food was lower, especially in fish, shrimp, products of animality blood, and animality abdominal organs. The rural children's scores of the dietary was lower than the town children.36.7%of the subjects ate all kinds of food every day.(2) Nutrients intakeThe subjects who reached the energy recommend nutrients intakes (RNI) was less than 40%of all objects.. The ratio of energy that supplied by carbohydrate and polyunsaturated fatty acid is higher than recommend intakes. Average intakes of protein didn't meet the recommend intakes.97.7%iron derived from vegetality food. The consumption of calcium, zinc, vitamin A and vitamin C was low.(3) Anthropometric measurementsThe ratio of stunting, underweight and wasting were 14.21%,4.65%,4.91% respectively. The ratio of stunting was lower than the levels of 1992 in China, but higher the level of 2002 in China. The ratio of underweight and wasting was lower than the level of 1992 and 2002 in China.(4) Nutritional laboratory examinationsThe average shortage ratio of Zinc, Iron and Copper were 20.8%,34.0%and 21.5% respectively.19.8%of the subjects'Ca was higher than limited level. The level of lead in town was higher than the children who lived in rural.(5)Feeding patterns of the children in HuiningThe average percentages of breast feeding in town and rural children were 40.7% and 50.0%respectively. Delayed introduction of complementary food was the most common. The proportion of nutrient supplement use was low. The choice of nutrients supplement in urban districts mainly depended on the physicians suggestion, but in rural area it depended on caregives'experience and media advertisement.2 Intelligence developments and the influence of the relations'social factors to the subjects'intelligence developmentsThe ratio of the people whose developmental quotient was low than normal value was 2.5%, and the town children's developmental quotient was better than rural children. The developmental quotient of those people who receive the preschoole education was higher than those people who wasn't received the preschoole education. The score of macro motion in single famial children was lower than the parents family. The subjes who care by parents have the higher score of developmental quotient. The children who had diseases in rinatal period and neonatal period has bad effect on intelligence development.3 The nutritional status(1)Subjects'food intake effect on the mental developmentPickled vegetables effect on the scores'of macro motion, meticulous motion, adaptive capacity, language and diffuse skills. nuts have linear correlation with major action, diffuse skills and developmental quotient. With the increasing intakes of minor cereals, the developmental quotient of town subjects has a growth tread, and the rural subjects has a reverse tread.(2)Subjects'malnourished status effect on the mental developmentThe ratio of abnormal developmental quotient in those people who belong to the group of overall malnutrition, stunting, underweight and wasting was higher than the control group, and the scores of the developmental quotient was lower than the control group. The ratio between the group of overall malnutrition, stunting, underweight and control group had a significant difference, and the ratio between the group of wasting had no significant difference.ConclusionThe subjects diet intake was unreasonable. The diet multiformity was poor. The nutritional status of subjects need development in the future. The intelligence of town subjects has higher scores than rural subjects. The subjects who received preschool education has higher scores than those who haven't received preschool education. The children who had diseases in rinatal period and neonatal period has bad effect on intelligence development. The long term chronic malnutrition have a significant affect on developmental quotient, and the current acute malnutrition on the development quotient was not obvious. Malnutrition limits the development of early pre-school education to enhance intelligence, good nutritional status will help bring into full play the function of early education.
