Objectives To evaluate the benefits and harms Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) combining with west medicine in patients with chronic renal failure(CRF) Review systematically whether there is enough existing Evidences that TCM is effective and safe in the treatment of the patients With west medicine. Methods We searched the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register(CCTR) The Cochrane Library issue 4 2009 MEDLINE(1996to2009), and China National Knowledge infrastructure (CNKI),Chinese Biological Medicine database(CBM), WanFang data. The Chinese journals related to TCM in 2009 searched by hand. Two authors independently assessed trial quality and extracted data from these Randomized Controlled Trails, then imported them into the Meta-analysis by Rev.Men 4.2.10.Results Twenty studies (1862 patients) were identified. The results of Meta-analysis indicated:there are evidences to support that using TCM combining with west medicine is better than west Benazapril only on symptoms and physical signs and reducing 24h urine protein quantitative and serum creatinin. But the methodological quality is considered low in these studies. Conclusions By the result of this study, Chinese medical herds combining with west medicine is more effective than simple western medicine on treating CRF. However, the evidence is not enough strong because of the low qualities of trials, the small sample sizes and other defects. We need to further strengthen the quality control of clinical research and have accumulated evidence effectively.
