ObjectiveThe prevalence of temporomandibular disorders tends to be increasing in recent years. The clinical manifestations included pain, mandibular movement disorder and joint sounds. The pain is one of common symptoms and give patient more sufering. Misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment may result in severe damage for patient. The research on TMD in China is still at an initial stage. The diagnostic criteria and treatment is relatively simple and backward. Therefore, the data collection and sorting about diagnosis and treatment is very important. Fortunately, the advantages of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Combined Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine (TCM-WM) treatment on TMD is becoming more prominent, which have reached more than ten kinds, and increasing year by year. This paper proposed to use Modern Medicine and Chinese Medicine theory for diagnosis and treatment basis, and collected various types of TMD treatment which are currently effective methods, such as traditional Chinese medicine (manipulation, massage, acupuncture) combined with physical therapy, western medicine, occlusal splint and orthodontics etc., in order to make it used in clinic, serving for the majority of TMD patients.MethodCollected nearly a decade clinical research literature about the diagnosis and treatment of TMD, and then filtered, classified and analysed the data, summarized a effective, reliable treatment program or programs, gave the majority of medical scholars a clearer concept and ideas about TMD Diagnosis and treatment, so as to guide clinical practice, serving the masses. ResultsAfter 80 years exploration, we gradually were aware of the treatment of TMD, which should eliminate pain, reduce bad match, restore function and improve the quality of life. In order to achieve the desired effect, we must first formulate a rational treatment plan or steps. That's to say we need to follow certain basic principles to do. Not only cure diseases, but also consider losing the least and benefit the maximum. For almost TMD patients, we should first consider the conservative treatment, such as behavior modification, physical therapy, medication and occlusal splint therapy. After conservative treatment, the symptons of most TMD patients can reduce or disappeare, and the large number of studies support this view. But a proportion of TMD patients still do not improve after conservative treatment. The causes are many, but we can divide these patients into two categories:â‘ pain and dysfunction due to abnormal intra-articular structures;â‘¡chronic pain caused by a variety of factors. For the first type of patients, the surgery is optional. But for the second type of patients, the situation is more complicated, often requires a multidisciplinary cooperation. After all, a clinician is difficult to deal with the treatment of chronic pain caused by a complex variety of virulence factors.ConclusionIn fact, the therapies of temporomandibular disorders almost are complex and comprehensive. Different types or different patients maybe have completely different programs. Therefore, we must emphasize that different types of TMD patients should have different specific analysis in theatment, and formulate specific treatment for their individual programs.
