ObjectiveTo investigate epidemiological features of maxillofacial injuries in Hunan Province from 1990-2009.Descrip the epidemiological information including the age,gender,occupation distribution of injury,cause of injury,type of fracture and nerve injury,and associated systemic injuries in Hunan Province.MethodsWe took a retrospective study on a total of 5 887 patients with maxillofacial injuries treated in 9 hospital of Hunan Province from 1990-2009.Data regarding age,gender,occupation,cause of injury, type of fracture and nerve injury,and associated systemic injuries were reviewed.ResultsThere are 5887 case form 1990-2009.The male to famale ratio of the patients was 3.78:1 and 23.51% of patiens were aged between 20-29 years. The Most common cause of injury wa traffic accident(55.82%).Multiple fractures(42.86%) had higher prevelance than single fracture and soft tissue injuries. The average number of fractures for each patient was 2.42.The mandibular fractures(40.32%) was most frequently seen,followed by the zygomatic fractures(37.81%) and maxilla(17.89%).The most common site of the mandibule fracture was the the condylar(25.58%),thebody(24.15%). The most common treatment is rigid internal fixation with plate.Accompanied injuries to brain an skull happende in 519 patients(30.02%).Conclusion1. The predilection age stage is 20-29,and the male higer than the famale.the most common cause of injury was traffic accident.2.The Multiple fractures had higher prevelance in maxillofacial injuries. The mandibular fractures(40.32%) was most frequently seen, followed by the zygomatic fractures(37.81%) and maxilla(17.89%). The most common treatment is rigid internal fixation with plate.3. Facial nerve is the first place of the nerve injury,Parotid injuries mainly as the parotid duct fracture.4. The brain and skull injuries is the most often and seriously accompanied injuries.
