Objective:To study the protective effects of Panax notoginseng on mice from acute alcoholic hepatic injury. Methods:The effective fractions (the water-soluble extracts and ethanol-soluble extracts from panax notoginseng) were extracted from Panax notginseng by Ultrasonic method. Hepatic injure models were established on 60 Kunming mice by intragastrical administration of high-concentration ethanol. The mice were randomly divided into 5 groups, including model, aqueous, ethanol and crude herb and control groups. The model group was administered intragastrically saline water. Water-soluble extracts, ethanol-soluble extracts and crude herb were administered intragastrically to the corresponding groups for 7 continuous days. After 7 days, the drunkenness and survival time of all groups was calculated. Then the mass and organ indexes of livers were determined; the histomorphological features of liver tissue sections were studied; The concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase(AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and total bilirubin(TB) in serum were assayed. The activities of glutathione perxidase(GSH-PX) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) and the level of malondialdehyde(MDA) in liver were assayed in according to the procedure described in kits. Results:Although no significant difference was found, the mean time of animal getting drunk were prolonged while the drunkenness time were shortened in each Panax notginseng group numerically compared with model group. Panax notoginseng especially the ethanolic extracts was able to reduce the organ index of liver and lessen hepatic tissue damage, reduce the level of AST, ALT and TB in serum, improve the activities of GSH-PX and SOD and reduce MDA level in liver. Conclusion:Panax notoginseng can reduce the oxidative damage of acute alcoholism to liver, and the effect of eth anolic extracts was stronger than the others.
