The development of modern linguistics in China is closely connected with the translation of foreign linguistic theories. However, with the increasing number of translated linguistic works, a great many of translated linguistic terms have entered Chinese language system,which leading to some urgent problems need to be solved immediately in domestic applied linguistic research, such as non-unification and nonstandard translation of linguistic terms. The confusion of linguistic terms translation blemished the research of foreign linguistics and influenced the development of linguistics indirectly. Therefore, it is necessary to standardize the translation of terms in linguistics. This dissertation aims to contribute to this end.This dissertation firstly generalized the characteristics of linguistic terms as monosemy, professionalism and productivity, and introduces its relationship with translation. Then it analyzes the nonstandard problems of the translated names of some linguistic terms in modern linguistic dictionaries, periodicals and some linguistic books, and generalizes the confusion of linguistic terms translation as two aspects: diverse translation and mistranslation. The factors causing the translation confusion were discussed in the same chapter, the author holds that the factors causing the confusion was many, but the main causes lie in differences between languages, context and the translator. Based on the above analysis, the dissertation discusses the principles and methods of translating linguistic terms: the principle of accuracy, the principle of acceptability, the principle of transparency and the principle of succinctness; neologism, abbreviation and acronym, and nativization. At the end of the dissertation, the author proposes some strategies in standardization of linguistic terms translation, the author holds that it need not only the improvement of translators on professional level but also the attention from the field of linguistics. Such as building up standardized online bilingual term database and establishing an authoritative academic institution in linguistics. Besides, the intervention of government is also needed.This dissertation aims to arouse the attention of the fields of linguistics and translation, and try to appeal more fields of the society to join the ranks of standardization, and finally to promote the communication between various disciplines while promoting the research and development of linguistics in China.
