The development of modern linguistics in China is closely connected with the translation of foreign linguistic theories. With the increasing number of translated linguistic works, a great many of translated linguistic terms have entered Chinese language system. They enrich the Chinese vocabulary but at the same time bring confusion and challenge to the Chinese language system, so it is necessary to standardize linguistic terminology with Chinese translation. Two ways are usually used in the study of standardization of terminology with Chinese translation in China: lexical way and translation way. Based on the analysis of the nonstandard problems of linguistic terms in modern linguistic dictionaries, periodicals and some linguistic books, this paper tries to discuss the possible causes of confusion in the use of linguistic terms from the cognitive point of view and puts forward principles and countermeasures of linguistic terminology with Chinese translation. Firstly, the paper maintains that the linguistic terminology with Chinese translation lacks standardization, which is manifested in four aspects: non-term translation; non-unification of new terminology; mis-translation and confusion of similar terms. Secondly, from the cognitive point of view, the paper holds that the causes are many, but the main causes lie in the internal features of terminology and knowledge level of individual translator. Thirdly, the paper puts forward five principles and countermeasures of linguistic terminology with Chinese translation. And lastly, the paper concludes that it is of great importance and necessity to standardize linguistic terminology, but there is still a long way to go.
