English newspaper reading, as an English major elective or compulsory course, is highlighted by different levels of colleges or universities. According to the statistics, about 80% colleges provide this kind of course and at least forty or fifty different types of textbooks. In the middle of the last century, some foreign countries have launched the project of Newspaper in Education. In the 1990s, Chinese middle schools began to use English newspapers as assisting teaching materials. However, teachers usually use cramming method to teach this course which can not activate the students'learning initiative and creativity. The teaching method is teacher centered and the teachers just explain the text sentence by sentence or translate it into Chinese. The subjectivity and awareness of subjectivity is suppressed by the teaching model. The researchers paid much more attention to the significance and meaning of reading English newspapers, but little attention to its teaching model, especially no systematic and deep application research. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the more effective teaching model of English Newspaper Reading, then to further improve the quality of teaching and enhance student development. This thesis attempts to explore the application of Subject Participative Teaching (SPT) in the course of ENR. To be more specific, this study will apply the framework of SPT model for the teaching of ENR to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of SPT in the instruction. A 14-week comparative experiment was conducted in two English major elective course classes in the English department of Longnan Teachers College to test whether SPT model is effective or not in the teaching of ENR. The two classes are randomly designed as the control class, using the traditional method, and the experimental class, adopting the SPT model. A combination of qualitative and quantitative analyses is used based on the data collected from the questionnaires, the interviews, as well as the pre and post-tests. Both Paired Samples t-test and Independent Samples t-test are used. After analyzing the results of the experiment, the author finds the following conclusions: First, the implement of SPT in ENR instruction improved the students'reading comprehension ability of reading newspaper articles. In contrast to CC, the students in EC obtained higher scores of reading comprehension test.Second, SPT teaching model made the students transfer their learning style and strategies. The students of EC have gradually realized and experienced the benefits of cooperative learning and group learning. However, there were still some students who did not get accustomed to this kind of learning style, but tended to learn individually. Third, the majority of the EC students could participate in all kinds of teaching and learning activities actively and positively and share their learning results. Their cooperative awareness has been strengthened. The EC students were more willing to learn by cooperative and inquiring learning styles. This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the background and motivation of the study and the problems which the author attempts to focus on briefly. Chapter 2 reviews the related studies in and outside China and further explains the research value. Chapter 3 interprets the definitions of newspaper English, reading, reading comprehension and the three models of reading comprehension. The theoretical framework of this paper contains the constructive learning theory, humanistic learning theory, the subject education theory and the participatory approach. Chapter 4 describes the hypothesis, participants, research tools, variables and the process of the study. Chapter 5 analyzes the collected data and the results of the study. Chapter 6 draws the conclusions of the study, and points out the implications and limitations.
