Fuzhou Shi Fan music (hereinafter referred to as Shi Fan) is the most representative pattern of folk instrumental music. The tradition music with long historic inertia prevails at a wide range. Generated before Yuan Dynasty, and taking shape during Ming and Qing Dynasties, Shi Fan scaled the heights of development for three times and preserved itself till now as the inertia of long history and traditional culture. The rich cadences, unique ancient instruments, and skillful performance techniques contribute to the local features of Fuzhou. Generated from, then widely applied to, and improved in the local customs, Shi Fan expresses the needs of Fuzhou people in terms of the daily life and the aesthetics. Mutually assimilated and influenced with Ming Opera, folk ditties in Fuzhou, and other musical instrumental melodies, Shi Fan is widely accepted as the emblem of local customs and cultures by the people in Fuzhou and the areas around it.The author studied Shi Fan by means of document research, field research, and comparative analysis research. The thesis consists of an introduction and 6 chapters. In the Introduction, the author makes a summary of the background, purpose, method and current status of the research. Chapter One introduces the name, origin, and developing process; Chapter Two a thorough analysis of the tuning of the stringed instruments, setting the keynote and performance features as well as the pattern of the band, lists of melody, and music scores; Chapter Three Shi Fan musical features including the structure of melody, the characteristics of performance and melody; Chapter Four the analysis of the inertia of Shi Fan music from the perspective of music and culture; Chapter Five the author's viewpoints and suggestions on the current status of inheritance an protection; Chapter Six the conclusion.
