Yu Guangzhong is a significant contemporary prosaist, poet, literary critic and translator. While Yu's accomplishments in prose and poetry are widely known, his achievements and contributions in the field of translation have not been duly recognized. In fact, Yu Guangzhong has already translated three plays, two novels, one biography in addition to a great deal of poetry. Besides his proficient in translation practice, he also has insightful ideas about translation itself. Many of his statements about translation are of originality.Based on Yu Guangzhong's translation ideas and practice, the thesis aims to explore the connotations of Yu Guangzhong's translation art. Many examples will be quoted and analyzed to show how his translation art is applied in practice. We first point out that compromise, interaction and fusion comprise the core connotation of Yu Guangzhong's translation art. Then Yu's play translation, poetry translation and novel translation will be utilized to shed light upon the three connotations. Yu's contributions to the form of poetry translation are remarkable. In his translations of regular verses and free verses, the formal qualities are well rendered through his skillful control in the length of the lines, the use of rhymes and the arrangement of rhythms. Finally, the significance of Yu Guangzhong's translation practice will be analyzed. We point out that throughout Yu's translation practice, he has manifested translator's subjectivity and establish equal communications between China and the western world on both cultural and linguistic levels. The success of Yu's translation practice also provides enlightenment to translation education.
