As the heroines of Moment in Peking and Gone With the Wind, Yao Mulan and Scarlett O'Hara are typical artistic female images in the Chinese and western histories of literature. They carry rich culture content and deeply express the different characteristics of Chinese and western culture. Yao Mulan was a smart and graceful woman who was regarded as "a Taoist daughter" and "a Confucian daughter-in-law", while Scarlett was such a traitor to social conventions that she fought to live in her own way.Mulan and Scarlett were similar in many aspects. For example, both of them were born in wealthy family and lived a fabulous life. Wars brought them hard experience but also made them grow up in heart. They both got strength from certain spirit support to conquer difficulties. On the other hand, because of the cultural differences between China and America, the character and views of life of Mulan and Scarlett were different from each other. These two images give expressions to many characteristics of Chinese and western culture. Those similarities and differences make it possible to make comparative studies between the two heroines. The essay puts Mulan and Scarlett into the background of Chinese and western culture and takes the method of parallel study to summerize their similarities and compare their differences from the views of aesthetic standard and philosophies, so as to thoroughly interpret the significance of Moment in Peking and Gone With the Wind, deeply comprehend the culturality of the two heroines, and to certain extent promote the cultural communication between china and America.
