Intending to get a direct and dominant result, most college students choose to read English newspapers to assist their English studies. However, many former studies have found that the educational effect of mass media should be recessive and indirect. The key purpose of this thesis is to find whether English newspaper, a mass media product, could achieve direct and immediate effects when it is used as an assisting English study material.Hence, adopting the "Uses and Gratifications" theory, Questionnaire and Depth interview approaches, this paper aims to research on the final effects and affecting elements of college students'English newspaper reading.Results of former studies have indicated that college students read English newspaper mainly to achieve its "educational function". However, the "sense of satisfactory" often turns out to fall short of their expectations. And this situation does not have much difference when elements like the sex, grade and major of the student are taken into account. At the end of this paper, explanation are made by analyzing the research results in "Uses and Gratifications" approach and discussions on some other related issues are also included.
