Considerable academic interest of sociolinguist in America has been aroused by the social varieties and functional varieties of language, among which religious English and speech style of American English are the main varieties as for American presidents' inaugural addresses. However, they have been paid little attention to by Chinese scholars yet.This thesis, therefore, attempts to interpret the linguistic features of the inaugural addresses from a sociolinguistic standpoint that each language variety has its own linguistic features social functions. Functional and social varieties of American English have their particular distinctive linguistic features.This thesis mainly deals with some linguistic features of the American presidents' inaugural addresses from the style variation and social variety. And it mainly introduces their linguistic features in the perspectives of pronunciation, vocabulary, and syntax which can be illustrated with some examples as reflected in the inaugural addresses of American presidents, such as Obama, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Bill Clinton.The inaugural addresses of American presidents are political speech.Political speech is an important cultural phenomenon.Its main function is to express the speaker's ideas and political attitudes aimed at the domestic affairs and diplomatic relationships as well as an important tool of political struggle.The American presidents' inaugural addresses are a classic representative of political speeches.When delivering the inaugural addresses,the American presidents will announce the ministerial programme, and persuade the people to accept and support their ideas.The inaugural addresses of American presidents have great influence on the whole world.
