A Study Of Variety And Variation In Translating And Using Terms

The translation and use of terms is of great importance to translation quality.Projects of book translation not only require the accuracy of term translation,but also demand higher readability.This thesis is a case study report based on the Chinese-English translation project of Income Distribution Reform Over 40 Years.Income Distribution Reform Over 40 Years is written by Quan Heng in Chinese and published by Shanghai Jiaotong University Press.Falling into the category of economy and trade,the book collates and analyzes the reasons behind China's widening income gap.This thesis explores the translation errors associated with the variation and varieties of terms and proposes strategies on how to avoid such mistakes in the future when translators translate and use terms.This thesis adopts the methods of comparison and induction.Based on previous studies,this thesis compares the draft version with the revised version and sorts out the modifications made by the proofreader.By analyzing the modifications regarding the terms,it summarizes three strategies in term translation and application,including substitution with related terms,adjusting part-of-speech and using correct collocation.This thesis is expected to help translators avoid term-related mistakes and hopefully can provide inspirations for term base designers.
