From ancient to modern times, translation as one of the centuries-old activities exists in cross-cultural communication, and the study of translation theories never stops. Thus,"Translation school"becomes a natural phenomenon. However, due to the specific object and different classification criteria, whether in the West or in China, there are various translation theories. As a result, it always brings inconvenience to translation researchers. With the marshaling of contemporary Western Translation division as a starting point, this thesis, taking description and classification methods, based on the classification criteria raised by Professor Liao Qiyi, re-divides the west translation school into three stages: the philological school stage, the linguistic school stage and the cultural school stage. The precise scientific attitude of western translators and theorists gave great influence to the development of Chinese translation theory. Compared with the"案本—求信—神似—化境"theory, the modern Chinese translation theory has been an undivided part of the world. But because of the specialty of Chinese cultural and historical development, the Chinese translation phenomenon also embodied its uniqueness.By focusing upon the historical influence of western translation theories on Chinese translation studies, and reviewing previous literature on the subject in question, this thesis re-divides the west translation schools into three stages, aiming to highlight their specific characteristics and bring to light the unique historical development of Chinese translation studies under the influence of western translation theories.
