With the enhancement of cultural exchange between China and Western countries, Chinese readers gain more access to authentic English news from newspapers and magazines in English-speaking countries. As an indispensable part of news category, news headlines play an irreplaceable role in decoding the message of each news item. News headlines are a window to comprehend the whole news content, at the same time; they perform the role of news item themselves. They have strong intertextual features as the most eye-catching part in the entire news. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the specific types and functions of English news headlines from the perspective of intertextuality.Since the concept of intertextality was created by French semiologist Kristeva in 1960s, it has been used and transformed by many theorists. Many scholars in China analyzed it in a certain context as a new type of literature and art method. This paper tentatively discusses and analyzes the intertextual English news headlines from their classification, linguistic features and pragmatic functions so that readers gain a more comprehensive understanding of the effects and the edition of them and better grasp the features of their application. The paper is composed of six chapters. The first chapter presents the introduction. Chapter two is the literature review. The third chapter introduces the features of English news headlines. Chapter four analyzes the specific intertextual forms of English news headlines and discusses intertextual sources and other factors concerned. The fifth chapter conducts an analysis of the pragmatic features of English news headlines from the perspective of the language and the application respectively. The sixth chapter sums up the paper.
