A headline is essential to a piece of news, and therefore calls for conscioustranslation under the guidance of an effective theory. Although much progress hasbeen made in the study of news translation in the past decades, news headline researchleaves much to be desired. This thesis, set within the framework of intertextual theory, aims to analyze and summarize some viable strategies targeted at news headlinetranslation. About forty English news headlines are collected from a range ofinternational English newspapers, such as The Washington Post, The New York Timesand Newsweek. They are classified and analyzed in the light of Fairclough’s notion ofintertextuality as an illustration of intertextual representation. The study also discusseshow to translate English news headlines into Chinese in the intertextual spaceproposed by Hatim and Mason. A set of parallel news headlines was used to elicit andpropose some translation strategies, such as retaining the intertextual space, extendingthe intertextual space and replacing the intertextual space. The purpose is to upgradethe translation quality and the translator’s intertextual awareness. The intertextualtranslation strategy is expected to facilitate our understanding of news headlines andlead us to better translation outcomes.
