This thesis is aimed to analyze intertextuality in Chinese web news headline from the perspective of memetics. Chinese web news becomes more accessible to the public with the deepening of globalization. As the “eye” of Chinese web news, Chinese web news headline occupies an important position in three aspects: summarizing main ideas, arousing readers' browsing interest and making web news reports unique. This makes the study of Chinese web news headline meaningful and necessary. In the 1960 s, Julia Kristeva primarily put forward the term “intertextuality”. From then on, “intertextuality” was applied to different fields of research by some theorists. In 1981, Robert de Beaugrande and Wolfgang U. Dressler firstly introduced the concept of intertextuality into linguistics and discourse analysis. Since then, intertextuality has become a significant theory in non-literary text study, such as discourse analysis of news and advertisement. In the meantime, Richard Dawkins, who was inspired by Darwinism, has advocated memetics theory. Memetics explains the law of culture evolution, with meme as a key term to describe cultural transmission. Based on the analysis of the collected data, this thesis aims to analyze intertextuality in Chinese web news headline from the perspective of memetics. This paper consists of an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion. The first part is the introduction which discusses the background and significance of this study. Chapter One is the literature review which presents the studies done before on intertextuality and web news headline. Chapter Two is mainly about the theoretical framework which is based on various notions of memetics. In Chapter Three, it firstly analyzes the interrelationship between intertextuality and memes, and then 22 examples are selected from several kinds of large Chinese news portal sites and cited to illustrate intertextual sources in Chinese web news headline. Finally, the manifestations of intertextuality in Chinese web news headline are demonstrated in two ways: memetic genotype and memetic phenotype. Memetic genotype includes direct quotation and indirect quotation. Memetic phenotype is achieved through two approaches of intertextuality: allusion and parody. Chapter Four analyzes linguistic and pragmatic functions of intertextuality in Chinese web news headline from the perspective of memetics. Six Chinese news headlines are chosen as examples in analyzing the pragmatic function. The last part is the conclusion of this thesis.Through analyzing intertextuality in Chinese web news headline from the perspective of memetics and find the reasons why they can work on headlines and produce effects, the author hopes to offer Chinese web news editors and readers some recommendations, so that more valuable web news headlines could be created and better appreciated, which might contribute in some way to the prosperity of journalism.
