As an outstanding representative leader of China's fourth-generation director, Wu Yi gong and the fourth- generation directors face with the similar dilemma of transition. They innovated unceasingly in inheritance and chose the way of "improved" instead of "subversion" , although they lacked the ability to finish the transition well and the results of transformation are unsatisfactory, but in a sense, their mature artistic mentality make their art vitality more durable and have more far-reaching influnce. Their historical status which links the preceding with the following in the Chinese movie history is unshakeable.The research of this thesis focus on the transition of Wu Yi gong's movies.The paper takes the process of movie transition of director of Wu Yi gong as a whole to inspect its transition process, causes of transition and arrive at a more reasonable transition evaluation through systematic comb, which can avoid the limitations of single-chip analysis and grasp the dilemma and limitations of the director Wu in a objective way, in order to grasp his history status in the Chinese movie.The first part of this paper reviews the context of the transformation of the director Wu Yi gong in four aspects: the themes, narrative strategies, structures, camera language. Through text analysis and by comparing his early and later works,we can find that Wu Yi gong is not a director of the gradual disintegration and retrogression in the transition process, but continue to learn from the experience, sum up the lessons of failure and continue the process to made the leap to new heights,and reach a new reaffirmation of himself in the process of confirmation.The second part of this article mainly analyzes the reasons for the transformation of director Wu Yi gong. In the objective aspect, the transformation of Wu Yi gong has inseparable link with the historical background and social-cultural context. The objective reasons for his transformation are as follows: film ideas in the new period, Literary Trends, and social and cultural context of transformation period. In the subjective aspect, Wuyi Gong's profound cultural literacy, the unique character of individual temperament, and the fit with traditional Chinese aesthetics and the aesthetic taste of the succession of innovative ideas and other subjective factors in the film also makes his film-making showing a distinctive artistic characteristics and affect his creative flow.The third part of this paper is to evaluate the pros and cons of Wu Yi gong's transition. In the "gain " aspects, the author believes that the director Wuyi Gong has innovative spirit; he inherited the innovation and good at self-examination; attention to absorb nutrients from the literature on the ideological content of literature. In the "lost" aspects, I believe, Wuyi Gong director's strong "elite consciousness" make his works difficult to arouse the concern of critics and audience's sympathy ; his film language in the later work is not subject to the constraints of the traditional concept of the times and didn't package with modern form; art foundation's weakness also makes Wuyi Gong unable to withstand the strong impact of the fifth-generation relatively in the innovation form; his role and identity have changed after he take the politics, which cause Wuyi Gong can't achieve a high degree of art as a film director; when open-minded ramble attenuates gradually to the life , the perception of life and art of the force gradually weakened, which largely influenced his later work in transition.The conclusion part points out that although Wuyi Gong's films are relatively quiet and not be concerned in the transition of the blatant film market, sticking to the traditional culture and the importance of literary works, the excavation of the ideological content of films etc,which is worthy of being promoted. Any country's prosperity of film is inseparable from the support of culture, if stripping of the ideological content of films and only working hard at the form skills, it is detrimental to long-term development of movies.
